Hauntology of an OG – Crystallmess

🕚 11am – 6pm
🎟️With exhibition ticket

In Hauntology of an OG, Crystallmess explores the American South—caught between inertia and brilliance—through the works of artists such as Arthur Jafa, William Faulkner, and Memphis hip-hop pioneers Three 6 Mafia. The region becomes a site for reflecting on survival and cultural transmission in Black communities, read through the lens of Southern Gothic: an aesthetic of ghosts, genre cinema, and contemporary rituals.

Hauntology of an OG (2025) by Christelle Oyiri and Neva Wireko was commissioned by Amant (Brooklyn, NY) and LAS Art Foundation (Berlin), with the support of the Pinault Collection (Paris).

The Other Queen of Memphis (22 min) – Luna Mahoux

🕕 6pm – 7:15pm
🎟️Free, with reservation. Followed by a 30-minute conversation with Luna Mahoux, La Chat and Darius "Phatmak" Clayton, moderated by Crystallmess , and a 15-minute poetry reading by Darius "Phatmak" Clayton.

Crystallmess invites Belgian filmmaker Luna Mahoux for a screening of The Other Queen of Memphis, a short documentary exploring grief and feminine iconography in Memphis rap, told through the voice of Chastity Daniels aka La Chat.

Luna Mahoux is a Belgian artist whose work explores overlooked Afro-diasporic narratives through music, documentary, and archival research. A graduate of La Cambre, she joined Le Fresnoy – Studio national des arts contemporains in 2023. During a research trip to the U.S., she examined music as living archive and Black experience through the prism of collective memory and individual narratives—highlighting how rap and Black music can serve as both memory and resistance.

Originally from the historic Orange Mound neighborhood in Memphis, Darius "Phatmak" Clayton delivers performances that blend poetry, music, and comedy. Founder of The Den in 2005, a central hub for the local arts scene where poets, musicians, and comedians gather, he is also actively involved in social advocacy, particularly for those facing homelessness. His influence extends from mentoring emerging artists to promoting the city’s underground arts scene, making him a central figure in Memphis's cultural ecosystem.

(#6793)
DJ Spanish Fly

Regarded as the godfather of Memphis rap, DJ Spanish Fly has shaped a singular sound since the 1980s—marked by heavy basslines, murky, hypnotic rhythms, and funk and blues samples. A key figure in the underground scene, his tapes circulated throughout Memphis, spawning genre-defining tracks like Get Buck and Gangsta Walk. A major influence on artists such as Three 6 Mafia and 8Ball & MJG, DJ Spanish Fly embodies the raw essence of Southern hip-hop whose legacy continues today.

(#6795)
La Chat

Originally from Memphis, La Chat rose to prominence in the late 1990s through Three 6 Mafia’s Hypnotize Minds label, with a sharp flow, raw lyrics, and fierce energy. Alongside her close friend and icon Gangsta Boo—whom she remembers in Luna Mahoux’s film—she forged a space for powerful female voices in a male-dominated scene. In 2001, she released her acclaimed solo debut Murder She Spoke, followed by the iconic single Chickenhead with Project Pat, before continuing her independent career with albums, mixtapes, and collaborations.

(#6797)
Tommy Wright III

A cult figure of Memphis’s underground, Tommy Wright III is one of the most influential rappers in the Southern DIY scene. Recording from the early 1990s, he layered rapid-fire flows over frenzied beats in a lo-fi aesthetic. A raw storyteller, his lyrics tackle street life, paranoia, and survival in albums like Ashes II Ashes, Dust II Dust (2006) and The Memphis Maniac (2011), delivering an unfiltered portrait of his city.

(#6799)
Cities Aviv

A singular voice in American underground rap, Cities Aviv hails from Memphis and began his musical career as the frontman of the punk band Copwatch. Drawing from his DIY roots, he crafts a hybrid sound that blends hip-hop, cloud rap, noise, ambient, and lo-fi textures. Since the 2010s, he has built a radical and introspective body of work, marked by deep vocals and dense production. In 2024, he released two experimental rap albums: Archive & Practice 001 and Cafe Tom Tom.
