Nan Goldin. Stendhal Syndrome

Stendhal Syndrome, shown as a slideshow, combines masterpieces of ancient, classical art, the Renaissance, and the Baroque with portraits that Nan Goldin made of her close friends and lovers. Created during her visits to the world’s major museums, these images erase the boundary between art history and personal experience in their combination of mythological figures and masterpieces of the past with the artist’s own community. Inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphoses, the work is narrated by the artist herself, an original composition by Soundwalk Collective, and a musical piece by Mica Levi. This piece contemplates love, loss, and memory as a way to assert the capacity of images to preserve beings, create a dialogue between the living and the past, and inscribe the most personal of histories in our collective memory.
